I recently had the privilege of hosting a Lutheran singles cruise from August 1-5, alongside Keri, Pastor Jared and Jan Melius (from Colorado), and Pastor Marsh and Rachel Shamberger (from California). This event saw 146 participants embarking on a journey from Galveston to Cozumel and back, aimed at fostering fellowship and faith among single Lutherans.
The cruise was designed to help single Lutherans make new friends and possibly find serious relationships. With a mix of 60 women, 80 men, and six hosts, the atmosphere was one of camaraderie and spiritual growth.
We structured the days with morning matins and mixers, followed by various island excursions on Saturday, and plenty of free social time. A notable event was the panel Q&A on Sunday afternoon, where we addressed questions about dating and relationships. Each night, single pastors and vicars led compline, offering a peaceful end to the day.
Many participants shared that this was their first cruise, and they appreciated the chance to meet other Lutheran young adults, especially since many of them are the only young adults in their congregations. The cruise facilitated many enriching conversations and connections, with some participants hinting at relationships that might continue post-cruise.
Our goal was to provide a space for fellowship, particularly for young single Lutherans. The attendees came from all over the United States, Canada, and even Norway. The themes we focused on were finding joy in life, having confidence in God’s love, and the importance of friendship. During a Bible study on Sunday morning, we explored how to be content with our circumstances while also striving for positive change.
The success of this cruise has led us to consider planning another event in two years, aiming to offer more opportunities for singles within the Lutheran community to connect and grow in faith.
